Three CAL teams advance in NJSIAA Girls Tournament play

Three Cape-Atlantic League girls basketball teams advanced on the first night of NJSIAA Tournament competition.

Bridgeton chalked up the biggest victory, winning at Haddonfield, 37-35. The Bulldogs will now visit Cinnaminson Wednesday in a South Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal.

Egg Harbor Township used 15 points by Jamila Garrett to rally in the fourth quarter for a 39-31 win over Toms River East in Group 4. The Eagles now visit Cherokee on Wednesday.

And Pleasantville rode 26 points by Kierra Walker and 24 by Aminah Davis to an 80-61 win over Point Pleasant Boro. The Greyhounds next Group 2 game is Wednesday at tough Manchester.

Two other CAL teams were defeated tonight. Mainland's season ended at 17-10 when it lost to Southern, 52-46, in Group 4. And Atlantic City (13-12) was held to single digits in every quarter in a 35-26 loss to Williamstown in Group 4.

The big news in New Jersey girls basketball tonight is that Malcolm X. Shabazz of Newark, the state Group 3 champions four of the last five years, has been declared ineligible to play in the tournament this year for playing too many regular season games.

There are no CAL girls teams in action Tuesday night but Absegami will begin its quest for a third straight state title on Wednesday at home against Southern.
