Ocean City, Holy Spirit both lose in NJSIAA play

Monday was a great night for Cape-Atlantic League basketball teams with five boys and three girls teams advancing.

Tuesday was not as good.

Ocean City dropped a 73-63 decision to Timber Creek in Group 3, ending the Raiders' season at 13-14. And Holy Spirit (17-9) was beaten by St. Joseph-Metuchen, 56-55, in overtime.  It marked the second straight year in which Spirit has lost to St. Joe in an overtime game.

Trey Severs finished his career with a 28-point performance for OCHS. He scored 1,554 points in his three years of varsity basketball, one of the 10 highest totals in Cape May County history. Severs also broke Ed Paone's Ocean City record by making 157 free throws this season. And his 216 career three-pointers is a CAL record.

A.J. Harris had 15 points for the Raiders on 7 for 9 shooting. And Brandt Heininger ended his career with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Devon Scioli had a season-high 8 assists for OC.

Holy Spirit led by seven entering the fourth period and had a four-point lead in overtime. But St. Joe scored in the final 10 seconds of OT for the win. Cliff Spiller scored 13 and B.J. Bailey 11 for HSHS. St. Joe beat Spirit in four overtimes last year.

Another area team was also eliminated tonight when Wildwood (13-12) dropped a 54-38 decision to Riverside in Group 1. Ryan Hall scored 13 and James Bevins 10 for the Warriors.

Look for more details on these games in your next edition of The Current, The Gazette or the Wildwood Leader.

Wednesday night you can hear the Atlantic City-Mainland Group 4 game on ESPN 1450 starting at 7 with Tony Blum and Tom Getzke. Other boys games featuring CAL teams Wednesday include Vineland at Cherokee and Absegami at Winslow Township in Group 4, and Pleasantville at Collingswood in Group 2.
