Four girls state championships decided at Ritacco Center
TOMS RIVER- Willingboro got 23 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks from 5-11 senior Tiffany Crews tonight and survived 50 percent foul-shooting to hold off South Plainfield, 53-46, for the NJSIAA Girls Group 3 state championship at the Ritacco Center. It was Willingboro's third state title in five appearances it has made in state finals over the last eight years. Willingboro was the Central Jersey champ this year, beating South Jersey titlist Woodrow Wilson in the state semifinal.
In other public state finals today, University put Palmyra away with a 26-3 second quarter and coasted to an 80-55 win in Group 1. Palmyra, which eliminated Wildwood in the South Jersey final, got 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists from senior Lailah Pratt.
Rumson-Fair Haven used its smothering man-to-man defense and 16 points by solid sophomore Kate Miller to defeat River Dell, 44-23, in the Group 2 final.
And Trenton Central, which defeated Absegami in the state semifinal, rallied from 12 points down to defeat Paterson Eastside, 52-44, for the Group 4 championship. Gami had won that title the last two years. Three players scored in double figures for the Tornadoes.
The Tournament of Champions begins Tuesday with two girls quarterfinal games at the Ritacco Center and concludes with the girl-boy championship doubleheader on Monday, March 19 at the Continental Airlines Arena in The Meadowlands.
