OC's Brett Johnson Wins 2nd SJ Championship
Ocean City High School sophomore Brett Johnson won again!
Johnson won the 3200 meters in the South Jersey Group 3 Meet yesterday after winning the 1600 meters on Friday. He ran the 3200 in 9 minutes, 51 seconds, more than six seconds faster than runnerup Mark Hopely of Kingsway. It was Johnson's fastest 3200. OCHS senior John Fennekohl finished fifth in the race.
Ocean City junior Ryan Birchmeier finished second in the 800 meters, being edged at the finish line for the second straight year by Camden's Casey Pinckney.
In addition, Melissa Terwilliger was fifth in the 100 meter hurdles and Anna Ceniccola fifth in the 800 meters. Johnson, Fennekohl, Birchmeier, Terwilliger, Ceniccola and pole vaulter Ali Decredico will all represent Ocean City in the NJSIAA State Group 3 Meet at Egg Harbor Township next weekend.
Among other CAL track developments, Oakcrest won the South Jersey Boys Group 4 championship, led by Raimundo Leach's two first places. Chuck Gormley was there and wrote the story in the Courier-Post
The Pleasantville boys won the 4x400 relay to beat Bridgeton, 87-72, for the South Jersey Group 2 championship. Bridgeton had won the title the last three years. Steve Wood covered the story in the Courier-Post
And a pair of juniors from Holy Spirit won the National Doubles Crew Championship yesterday in Camden. Charlie Sprang reports the story for the Courier-Post.
In another story, Wildwood Catholic's Anthony Raffa had his No. 11 retired on Thursday (see Brian Cunniff's blog). He is also ready for the challenge facing him next year at Albany, as he told Sam Carchidi in the Inquirer.
