Casey Beyel, Mary Wilks, Matt Szczur Win Flagship Awards
Lower Cape May's Matt Szczur, already in summer classes at Villanova University, was named a winner of the Seventh Annual Flagship Award as the top male senior athlete from Cape-Atlantic League schools.
And Ocean City's Casey Beyel and Bridgeton's Mary Wilks tied for the female award. Beyel is headed to Duke University and Wilks to Monmouth.
Szczur gained over 1,100 yards rushing during Lower's 7-3 football season, had a successful indoor track season running the 55 meters and hit .681 during the baseball season, an all-time CAL record. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers but will play football and baseball at 'Nova instead.
Beyel led the CAL in lacrosse scoring, was second in the league in field hockey scoring and started for the Raider basketball team. All three of those teams won CAL championships. She will play field hockey at Duke.
Wilks was all-conference in girls soccer three times, all-conference in basketball and all-conference three times and a state champion in track. She will play soccer and compete in track at Monmouth.
The Flagship Awards were created by Jason Kaye and his staff at the Fantasy Resort/Flagship in Atlantic City and are also sponsored by William Schoppy Inc. and Catamaran Media.
