Mike Pellegrino, former players complete season with Barons
It was quite a summer for Ocean City High School boys soccer coach Mike Pellegrino.
As the first-year head coach of the Ocean City Barons, a team of mostly college players who traveled up and down the Mid-Atlantic states, Pellegrino guided the team to a win in the prestigious US Open Cup tournament and a spot in the PDL playoffs.
It gave Pellegrino a taste of soccer at the next level and the time-consuming dedication it requires. It also gave him a chance to work again with some of his former players. Among the OCHS graduates who played for the Barons this summer were Kyle Evans, who had 4 goals and 4 assists; Adam Sternberger, who scored 3 goals; Mike Mousaw, who scored a goal in just 3 games; and backup goaltender Kyle Crego.
Another former Cape-Atlantic League player on the team was Billy Pinto from St. Augustine Prep.
And, during the season, the Barons hosted Harrisburg in the US Open Cup second round. They lost that game when Chad Severs scored a goal and assisted on another. Severs set the all-time South Jersey soccer scoring record while playing for Pellegrino at Ocean City High School. It was the first time he had played soccer in the resort since he graduated from high school.
