Gami-Hammonton Is The Big Game This Weekend
Absegami has been right in the thick of the American Conference race the last three years, tying for two championships and winning another outright. So, if the Braves drop into the cellar after four weeks it will be a dramatic change.
Gami lost to Mainland, 21-7, last week when it had trouble moving the ball. This week, Doug Colman's team will host Hammonton, undefeated in two games. A win by Absegami would keep it a three-way race but a Hammonton win would push Gami to the back. And make it really difficult for the Braves to return to the South Jersey Group 4 final for a third straight year.
Meanwhile, Egg Harbor Township will be trying to join that American Conference race when it seeks its third straight win at Atlantic City. The Vikings are 0-2 and have not run the ball effectively. But they sure have been effective throwing it, holding a 12-10 lead over Hammonton with six minutes left before the Blue Devils rallied.
Mainland seeks its third straight win tomorrow night with a trip to Millville. The Thunderbolts have been shut out the last two weeks.
And a pair of 1-2 teams - Ocean City and Oakcrest - will try to turn their seasons around when they meet tomorrow night in Mays Landing. The quarterbacks - OC's Vinnie Djukanovic and the Falcons' Craig James - are the centers of their respective team's offenses.
In the National Conference, St. Joseph will be favored to win its 34th straight at Buena. The Wildcats will be expected to win until they face a possible challenge from St. Augustine on Oct. 27 in Richland and a classic game with Holy Spirit in the Nov. 6 conference final for both teams in Hammonton.
This week, Holy Spirit will seek its third straight win at Middle Township and St. Augustine goes after No. 4 at home against Lower Cape May. A win tomorrow night will probably qualify The Prep for the NJSIAA playoffs.
In the other CAL game tomorrow night, Bridgeton will try to rebound from its tough loss against St. Joe with a game at Pleasantville. The Greyhounds are still seeking their first win.
