Four CAL Football Teams Remain Undefeated

Last night's Cape-Atlantic League football results will give the Oct. 26 Hammonton-Mainland game in Linwood championship status. And St. Augustine, which probably put itself into position to reach the Non-Public 4 playoffs with its fourth straight win last night, will now get the real test - the Hermits host Bridgeton next Friday and visit Holy Spirit on Oct. 12.

St. Joseph had to scramble in the fourth quarter last night to gets its 34th straight victory, St. Augustine and Holy Spirit coasted to wins and Hammonton held off Absegami to emerge from Week 4 as the only undefeated Cape-Atlantic League football teams.

St. Joe and Buena were in a scoreless tie in the fourth quarter but the Wildcats scored three times in the final period, sealing the win when Keith Corcoran returned an interception for a TD, for a 19-6 victory.

William Washington scored 4 times and Holy Spirit notched its first passing TD of the season in a 39-0 win over Middle Township.

Hammonton built a 28-0 lead, getting two rushing TDs from Ashton Alicea, and handed Absegami a 28-7 defeat, the second straight for the Braves.

And sophomore QB Dustin Thomas, already leading the CAL in touchdown passes, threw four more as The Prep defeated Lower Cape May, 49-14.

Egg Harbor Township was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten when Atlantic City used Bill Reid's interception in the final minute to end an EHT threat and lock up a 17-14 win over the Eagles. It was the first win for ACHS.

In other action, Mainland got a pair of TD passes and one rushing touchdown from Brent Caprio to defeat Millville, 45-8. The win kept the Mustangs tied with Hammonton for 1st place in the American Conference.

Oakcrest used three fourth quarter interceptions - one returned for a TD by Ray Larry - to hold off Ocean City, 28-14. The Falcons led, 20-0, after one quarter. It was the first win over the Raiders by the Oakcrest since 1993, a stretch of 11 straight losses.

And Bridgeton defeated Pleasantville, 26-15, as the Greyhounds dropped to 0-4.
