Chris Lentz Named New OCHS Athletics Director

Dr. Chris Lentz, who coached the Ocean City High School girls basketball team to 217 victories and two appearances in South Jersey finals, was approved by unanimous vote tonight to succeed Paul LeFever as OCHS director of athletics. LeFever had announced he would be retiring during December.

Lentz, who received her PhD since retiring as a coach, has been teaching science at the high school. She will officially be an assistant principal in charge of athletics, health and physical education. As a basketball coach, her team qualified for the NJSIAA playoffs 13 times in her 16 seasons. Her 1987-88 and 1989-90 teams both reached South Jersey finals. Her 89-90 team won 20 games, the last OCHS girls team to do that until Paul Baruffi's club's current three-year streak.

Lentz becomes the second woman to direct a coed athletic program in the Cape-Atlantic League, following Joan Robinson of Pleasantville, who has since retired. Michele McGrath is currently AD at Our Lady of Mercy, an all-girls school. And Kay Ballinger, now retired, served as co-athletics director at Bridgeton, overseeing the girls programs.
