Ocean City Rallies From 21 Down To Beat Oakcrest

Ocean City High School's boys basketball team evened its record tonight with a tremendous comeback against Oakcrest.

The Raiders trailed by 21 points late in the second quarter but used five three-pointers by Matt Whitworth in the second half, 10 points by Chris Harris in the final six minutes and a layup by Bud Johnson with 1.2 seconds left for a 60-58 victory.

Ocean City (7-7) shot 53 percent in the second half after struggling with 28 percent shooting in the first 16 minutes. Whitworth hit four three-pointers in the third quarter, a new school record, and a fifth one midway through the fourth period.

The Raiders did an excellent job on Oakcrest's Alex Nelson, South Jersey's leading scorer. They held him to 12 points, including 0 for 7 from three-point range. Kevin Miller led the Falcons with 16 points. Darnell Johnson added 14, including 4 of 5 three-pointers.

Whitworth, who transfered from Chestnut Hill Academy earlier this month, led OCHS with 19 points in 22 minutes. Harris added 14 with powerful inside play and Bud Johnson, who slipped through the Oakcrest defense for the game-winner, had 11 points, 5 steals and 6 assists. Chris Curran had 8 points and 7 rebounds and Brett Johnson added eight points.

The win left Ocean City needing two wins in the next four games to qualify for the NJSIAA Group 3 Tournament.

The complete box score is available online.

Ocean City, winner of two straight, is home against Lower Cape May on Thursday and plays a non-league game at Triton on Friday. Oakcrest (3-10) will try to end its 9-game losing streak at Millville on Friday and will host Atlantic Christian on Saturday.
