Cape-Atlantic Teams Were 5-0 Tonight in NJSIAA Action

The Cape-Atlantic League continues to thrive in the NJSIAA Basketball Tournament.

All five CAL teams in action tonight were winners, giving the league a 12-4 record the last two night.

Holy Spirit and St. Augustine Prep were both comfortable winners in Non-Public A boys play to set up their third meeting of the season on Saturday (4pm) in Absecon. Spirit defeated Gloucester Catholic, 68-52, with Sean McGonigal getting 16 points and Matt DeSouza 15. The Prep buried Bishop Ahr, 76-52, with Josh Thompson scoring 25. Holy Spirit beat St. Augustine twice this year - by 8 and by 14 - but this time the winner will advance to the South Jersey final next Tuesday at Jackson Liberty High School.

The Hammonton boys rallied from a 7-point halftime deficit in Group 3 to edge Central Regional, 66-65. Travis Washington scored 25 points for the Blue Devils who will host Deptford on Saturday. In the other Group 3 semifinal, Shawnee, an overtime winner over Camden, will host Timber Creek.

Both the Ocean City and Lower Cape May girls won in Group 3 but in completely different ways. Ocean City blasted three-time defending South Jersey champion Woodrow Wilson, 88-37, with Shannon Lane scoring 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter. The Raiders led, 30-5, after one period. Ocean City will now host Seneca in a Saturday (6pm) semifinal.

Lower Cape May scored the final 9 points of the game, including 2 free throws by Stephanie Dugan with 13 seconds left, to beat Moorestown, 40-39. Alex Matthews led Lower with 12 points. The Tigers will now host Shawnee on Saturday.  Shawnee upset Timber Creek tonight.

Eight CAL teams will see action tonight - four of them playing each other. In boys Group 4, Mainland will be at Atlantic City. They split during the regular season and the winner tonight will return to ACHS on Monday for the South Jersey final. Middle Township goes to Collingswood and Pleasantville to Cinnaminson in Group 2, a tough task for both CAL teams. And St. Joseph opens play in Non-Public B with a game against Holy Cross.

You can listen to John Leon's radio broadcast of the Middle Township game online. Tony Blum & Tom Getzke are broadcasting the Mainland-Atlantic City game on ESPN-1450 but, sadly, it is not available online.

In girls play tonight, Absegami faces another tough test when it plays Washington Township at Richard Stockton College. The game could not be played at Gami because of the Region 8 wrestling. This will probably be Absegami's last game without 6-5 senior Sara Mostafa, who is expected to return next Tuesday for the South Jersey final, if her team gets there.

In the other girls game, St. Joseph visits Sacred Heart in Non-Public B. Sacred Heart won both meetings between the two teams during the regular season.

All of these results mean that the Cape-Atlantic League is already assured of at least one team in the Boys Group 4 and Boys Non-Public A South Jersey finals.
