Atlantic City Boys, Absegami Girls Reach South Jersey Finals

The Absegami girls moved one step closer to their 4th straight South Jersey Group 4 championship tonight with a 50-40 win over Washington Township at Richard Stockton College. And the Atlantic City boys defeated Mainland, 55-43, to reach the South Jersey final in Group 4.

Two other Cape-Atlantic League teams also advanced tonight in Non-Public B. The St. Joseph boys defeated Holy Cross, 57-56, and the Sacred Heart girls defeated St. Joseph, 65-43.

Both of the CAL teams in Boys Group 2 were defeated tonight. Pleasantville took top-seeded Cinnaminson into overtime before losing, 90-88. And Middle Township struggled in a 58-34 loss to Collingswood.

Umar Shannon and Khalif Toombs each scored 14 and Anthony Woodard added 12 for Atlantic City, which will play Winslow Township Monday night (7pm) in the South Jersey final. This is that bizarre situation where Winslow played all season to earn the No. 2 seed and Atlantic City, seeded No. 5, gets to be the only team in the state to play a sectional final on its home court. Sean Bannon scored 16 tonight for Mainland.

Tara Booker scored 32 of Absegami's 50 tonight as the Braves recovered from a 10-0 deficit at the start of the game. Booker was fabulous at both ends of the court. The Gami fans were right when they chanted, "You can't stop her". But so much is made of her talents and those of 6-5 senior Sara Mostafa (deservedly so) that people forget what solid team defense Absegami plays. By the way, Mostafa will be evaluated Monday to determine if she can play Tuesday night against Eastern at Williamstown. Gami is trying to become only the second CAL girls team in history to win 4 straight South Jersey titles. Joe Fussner's Atlantic City team did it from 1979-82.

The St. Joseph boys advanced to meet Trenton Catholic in Monday's South Jersey semifinal. The Sacred Heart girls, who got 33 points from Ashley Durham, will now host Holy Cross.

Pleasantville rallied from 7 points down in the 4th quarter. The two teams scored 28 points in the 4-minute overtime. Tom Salvesen's 10 points led Middle, which was outscored in every quarter.

There are 6 CAL teams in action tomorrow, plus the Wildwood girls. In a boys Group 3 semifinal, Hammonton will host Deptford at 7pm. In a Non-Public A semi, Holy Spirit faces St. Augustine Prep for the third time, this one in Absecon at 4pm.

Among girls, Lower Cape May hosts Shawnee at 4pm and Ocean City hosts Seneca at 6pm in the two South Jersey Group 3 semifinals. The Wildwood girls go to Gloucester in a Group 1 semi at 4pm. And Holy Spirit's girls are at St. John Vianney at 4pm in Non-Public A.

You can listen online to Brian Cunniff's radio broadcast of the Wildwood game on 98.7FM at 4pm, followed by the Ocean City game, also on 98.7FM. And Scott Wahl & Buddy Tarbotton will broadcast the Lower Cape May game on 94.3FM. You can follow these links to the online broadcasts.

Tony Blum & Mike Gill are broadcasting the St. Augustine-Holy Spirit game on ESPN-1450 but, sadly, it is not available online.
