Tara Booker, Anthony Barone Win Flagship Awards


Absegami basketball star Tara Booker and Anthony Barone, a key contributor in three sports for Hammonton, have been selected winners of the 8th annual Flagship Awards as the top senior athletes in the Cape-Atlantic League.

The awards were created by Prime Events and William Schoppy Inc.in association with FantaSea Resorts, owners and operators of The Flagship Resort in the Atlantic City inlet, where the boardwalk begins. The awards are also sponsored by ESPN 1450 and Catamaran Media.

Booker scored 1,862 points in her four years as a starter at Absegami. The Braves won four South Jersey titles and two state championships and were 102-17 with her in the lineup. She will attend George Washington University.

Barone caught 40 passes for 536 yards and was a two-time first team all star in football, led the CAL in steals and was second in assists while earning first team honors in basketball, and was a four-year starter in baseball. He will attend Rowan University where he will play football.

Other female finalists this year were Amber Beauchemin of Absegami, Gina DeAnnuntis of St. Joseph, Rachael Dix of Egg Harbor Township, Aliyah Nelson of St. Joseph, Allison Nickels of St. Joseph, Joanna Thomas of Mainland, Erika Wachter of Egg Harbor Township, Erinn Wescoat of Absegami and Nancy White of Ocean City.

The other male finalists for 2007-08 were Brendan McHugh of St. Augustine, Blake Trabuchi-Downey of St. Augustine, Charlie Law of Mainland, Bryan Nguyen of Absegami, Demetrius Rooks of Absegami, William Washington of Holy Spirit, Norman White of St. Joseph, Dominique Williams of Bridgeton and Marcus Witherspoon of Holy Spirit.

Booker, Barone and their coaches will be interviewed during a special one-hour program tomorrow night starting at 6:00 on ESPN 1450-AM. A complete list of Flagship Award winners and finalists is available online.
